Behind The Song
Alexander James Rodriguez entered 2024 with the continuation of his synth-pop era with the release of his single, ‘Ride Or Die’. The award-winning 16-year-old British native co-produced the single which leads his debut album “Call Me Alexander”. Driven forward by 1980s inspired new wave with multiple synthesizers and live saxophone solo, ‘Ride Or Die’ is centered around a free-spirited young woman who charms and ensnares everyone within her path with her hypnotic beauty, and magnetic confidence and charm, but when cards are stacked, she will always be his “ride or die”.
For the music video, Alexander was inspired by the use of cinematic split screen transitions, a technique which signals a certain stylization so as to divide our attention between his character and that of the saxophone player. He also produced the background street sound effects and overall music for the video including the mixing from street noises to final recording.
“The night we filmed the video, the song had just released. It was a last minute “Hey let’s make a visual.” Santee Alley in the Fashion District of Los Angeles was locking up, street sweepers were washing down the road and scooping up the bags of rubbish. The four of us rocked up with one battery powered light and one camera. There were mannequins still being pulled inside from that days trading, people were hugging and headed home. We stood on the corner and my mom pressed play on the portable speaker for the song. Her vision was super clear. A sax player practicing on the empty alley and a lonesome character kicking around the street waiting to tell his story, to anyone that would listen, of his girl who was fearlessly independent but always his ride or die.” ~ Alexander
